At HuizingHarvest, we support manufacturers, dealers, and farmers in the agricultural sector, whether it’s through demos, training, service work, or hands-on field support.
But what we particularly enjoy is when we get the chance to explore projects that go beyond daily service. Projects that combine real-world machine use, customer behavior, and strategic decision-making.
What we particularly enjoy is when we get the chance to explore projects that go beyond daily service.
Over time, we’ve been asked to support independent research in areas such as:
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis of machinery
Functional and safe workshop design based on user needs
Mapping best practices across regions
Exploring user behavior, training gaps, and maintenance bottlenecks
Field optimisation and providing practical advice
Gathering market feedback for product improvement
These projects help us understand not just how machines perform, but how they are experienced and how value is defined from the user’s perspective.
Recently, we carried out a TCO study focusing on machines from various manufacturers across several countries. The aim? To explore how this machine compares to others in daily use and to learn what really matters to users when making a purchase decision.
We spoke with farmers, contractors, rental companies, dealers, and technicians many of whom work with multiple brands side by side. This provided us with open, honest comparisons based on real-life experience. What surprised us most? TCO is never a one-size-fits-all story. In one country, fuel efficiency was key. In another, parts availability or ease of use carried more weight. The type of business whether owner operator, rental fleet, or contractor also influenced how value was perceived.
We keep our process structured yet practical, always ready to adapt to real-world conditions:
Desk research: Market context, background data, user profiles
Interviews: One-on-one conversations with users and dealers
Cost analysis: Purchase, maintenance, downtime, parts, daily use
Insights: Clear, visual summaries, SWOT analysis, practical conclusions, and a final presentation with clarification at the customer
We always work under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to ensure confidentiality for both the client and the people we interview. No brand names, figures, or personal identities are ever shared without consent. This is what allows us to collect honest and unbiased input.
For us, this is the kind of project we really enjoy. It combines technical curiosity, practical field experience, and real human stories. No project is ever the same. We get to travel, meet people we wouldn’t otherwise speak to, and help our customers connect their products more closely to what really matters in the field.
We usually run these projects in autumn or winter when machines are parked and users have the time and headspace to reflect on their experiences. That’s when the most valuable conversations take place.
